The Pastor’s Paragraphs…
I’ve reflected a lot in the last couple of months about what a long, strange trip it’s been since Covid upended so many things for so many people. This time five years ago, my Sioux City congregation held a short Christmas Eve service little resembling the lavish production we generally enjoyed. I preached behind a Plexiglas panel under low lights that set the atmosphere to soft carols. After nine grueling months of adapting worship and pastoral care to the demands of Covid, I looked like this:

Fast forward to Christmas Eve 2024. Trinity celebrated what I thought would be our last Christmas Eve service together. The PNC was days away from posting the job description for your next pastor and I found myself rather dreading the day it would go live. Still, we’d all done good transitional work and I felt confident God was leading Trinity in a good direction. I wasn’t as sure about what God was doing with me.
Here we find ourselves again, friends, at Christmas, still together and clearly not by accident. Being your pastor for the last two years has brought me exceptional joy and I know many of you share my confidence and excitement about stepping into the months and years ahead of us. What’s waiting for us? As Minnie Louise Haskins famously wrote, “God Knows”:
And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown”.
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way”.
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.
And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.
Merry Christmas, dear ones, and God’s blessings upon the coming new year!
